My idea is to transform existing urban infrastructure into a large-scale, passive air purification system using pollution-absorbing active surface coatings. Instead of relying on standalone air purifiers or expensive infrastructure changes, I focus on turning already existing surfaces such as roads, buildings, flyovers, and pavements into functional environmental assets. The core of my solution is a coating that can be applied like paint or a thin layer during regular maintenance cycles. This coating combines photocatalytic materials such as titanium dioxide with adsorptive materials like activated carbon or biochar. When exposed to sunlight, the photocatalytic component triggers chemical reactions that break down harmful pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds into less harmful substances. At the same time, the porous structure of the coating captures particulate matter such as PM2.5 and PM10, reducing airborne pollution in high-density urban areas. What makes my idea strong is that it does not require new infrastructure. Instead, I upgrade what already exists. Roads are already repainted, buildings are already maintained, and public spaces are already serviced. I integrate my solution into these existing processes, which makes it highly practical and cost-effective. To make the idea more than just a material innovation, I integrate a data layer. I use air quality sensors placed in selected areas to measure pollution levels before and after application. This allows me to quantify impact in terms of pollution reduced per square meter. I can then provide dashboards and analytics to municipalities and organizations, making the solution measurable and transparent. I also explore adding a visual feedback element, such as slight color variation over time based on pollution exposure. This creates awareness and gives visible proof of impact, which helps build trust with users and stakeholders. From a business perspective, I position this as a service rather than a one-time product. I provide application, maintenance, and data analytics as a continuous offering. Over time, I can also integrate this system into environmental credit frameworks, allowing cities or companies to monetize their pollution reduction efforts. Overall, my idea shifts the approach from centralized pollution control to distributed, invisible, and continuous action. Instead of installing machines to clean air, I make the entire city participate in cleaning itself.
