How to Make Progress Toward Gender Equality

gender equality

Millions of women and girls all over the world wake up every day in situations and circumstances that prevent them from enjoying their rights. Even though women are entitled the right to education, vote, property, equal wage, to live free from slavery and violence, and much more they are still denied their rights.

Iceland is the first country in the world that declared pay inequality illegal in January 2018. According to the Global Gender Gap 2017, an index that examines the gap between women and men in the following four categories: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment in 144 countries says that no country in the world has fully closed the gender gap.

“No country in the world has fully closed its gender gap, but four out of the five Nordic countries and, for the first time this year, one country each from Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and Eastern Europe and Central Asia regions—Rwanda, Nicaragua, and Slovenia—have closed more than 80% of theirs. Yemen, the lowest-ranking country, has closed slightly less than 52% of its gender gap,” the report says.

Gender issues affecting women all over the world

  • Millions of girls are denied the right to education
  • Honor killings
  • Domestic violence
  • Sexual harassment and assaults
  • Forced displacement due to war, conflict, and genocide
  • Female genitalia mutilation
  • Early pregnancy
  • Maternal death
  • Inadequate maternal and child healthcare
  • Human trafficking and sex slavery
  • Child marriage
  • Biased parents
  • Drowry-act
  • Unrepresented, no role models in politics, in the justice system, science, social life
  • Pay Gap
  • The stigma against women health (periods, body shape)

All these issues need to be taken seriously because they hurt women, girls, and families and violate human rights. Some countries are making progress, while others have a long way to go toward gender equality. This means that each of us is living in a place where women face a gender-related problem. If you have an idea or project that support women’s rights and helps to reach gender equality, submit it at the 2018th edition of the Youth Citizen Entrepreneurship Competition. Remember that economic empowerment accelerates progress. You can gain an entrepreneurial mindset and skills necessary to start your own social initiatives. Take advantage of our free training courses and you will learn how to see opportunities in every problem.

Gender equality is very necessary for the world to be developed. As an initiative, I strongly believe that gender equality involves “Millions of girls are denied the right to education”

Oh my world the discrimination is just too much. In the era of corona virus lockdown is the challenge of sexual abuse of baby girls, girls and women by family members at home. We all need to work togther to bring an end to gender inequality.

Economic empowerment of women will half the problems associated with gender inequality. I noticed in my community that most of the cases of early marriage, denial of education just to mention a few happen mostly in the families where the mother or woman of the home is economically dependent and have nothing to bring to the table. Teach women skills and make them entrepreneurs and they would fight for theirs and female wards rights to education, proper marriage age, right to health and political representation etc.

For many years gender inequality has been persisting worldwide, depriving women and girls of their basic rights and opportunities. In many parts of the world, many women are being discriminated. In Africa it is believed that women belong to the kitchen while men are the ones that need to go get education and work. Things to do with early marriages, abuse, rape and the rest need to be stopped and fought against, we need to have more women in leadership and decision making. Women need to be empowered, empowering a woman is important for the development of the world or nation. Say No to Gender inequality! It is time for change.

Gender equality, equality between men and women, entails the concept that all human beings, both men and women, are free to develop their personal abilities and make choices without the limitations set by stereotypes, rigid gender roles and prejudices. Gender equality means that the different behaviour, aspirations and needs of women and men are considered, valued and favoured equally. It does not mean that women and men have to become the same, but that their rights, responsibilities and opportunities will not depend on whether they are born male or female. Gender equity means fairness of treatment for women and men, according to their respective needs. This may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but which is considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations and opportunities.
