#MEET Focus

This is a short interview we conducted with Adrian Hsu, the founder of “Focus: Your Time Thief Was Caught”. If you like the concept of this idea and would like to vote for it, click HERE.

  1. What is your background? (Nationality, age, education, field of work). Please tell us your full name and the name of your project.

I am Adrian Hsu, born in 1995, Taipei Taiwan, and currently study in NTU, majoring in EECS. My project is "Focus", which is a mobile application for solving mobile addiction. I’m enthusiastic, organized and creative. These characteristics make me to be a superb leader in every workshop and brainstorming activities.

  1. Describe your idea or project in two sentences.

Focus can effectively help 230M potential mobile addicted users to improve their time management skills, users can not only see their app usage, but also compete with friends or global average. We wish to make mobile users raise awareness of their own app usage, and pay more attention on whether they are in a healthy relationship with their phones.

  1. What are the benefits you take from the Entrepreneurship Campus?

Getting in contact with youth entrepreneurs all over the world are the most thrilling, mesmerizing part for me. I met some friends in the Campus and also chatted on Facebook, thanks to the "Add Friend" function in Campus website. Secondly, I encountered tons of challenges and suggestions, all of them were extremely helpful and concrete, I really appreciate every friend's suggestions; and the warmest part is that, Entrepreneurship must meet with ups and downs, thanks to the Campus guys, I received so many warm words and encouragement, which made me keep the faith, and never give up.

  1. What motivates you to be an entrepreneur?

"If something is important enough you should try, even if the probable outcome is failure." - Elon Musk In April 2015, I was picked as the finalist, representing Taiwan, for Asia-Pacific Student Entrepreneurship Society SUMMIT 2015, selected from 200+ delegates in Asia. Taking part in workshops with other delegates interested in changing the world, and brainstorming with talented people really mesmerize me. I expect myself to be well-rounded, and I believe that if I combine my talent with diligence, I can excel in your pursuit. Not only for EECS engineering, have I also cultivated my skills for UI/UX Design and business management.

  1. Imagine you have ‚supreme power’ to create and innovate: how would your world look like? What changes would you like to make in your community and/or in the world? Share your thoughts from a ‚supreme power’ and entrepreneur standpoint.

This question made me think of my dream startup ideas, which was fantastic but a bit unrealistic, however this is my ULTIMATE life goal.

Not long ago, my friend and I submitted for Solve for X Moonshot, a project held by Google Inc. This project aimed to find some significant startup ideas with fascinating insight concerning technologies. We named our project “DOTs”, since that Steve Job’s “Connecting the dots” approach is the key inspiration. Briefly speaking, DOTs is a platform aims to change the notion that ads are annoying and irritating, combining the powerful algorithm of Google Search, the straightforward “C2C” model of Uber, the simplicity of mobile apps and the philanthropy of NGOs. Below are some specifications about our project:

(1) Every click represents a donation.

(2) Redefinition of form, structure and purpose of ads.

(3) Utilization of Big Data to analyze user preference.

(4) Social Entrepreneurship; C2C Business model.

(5) Organization of ads into “Mind Maps”, a platform of connected dots based on user preference.

I wish to build up a social enterprise which relieves Global Poverty, disparity between rich and poor, and education.

  1. What would you say to potential voters who may be reading your interview?

Focus can effectively help 230M potential mobile addicted users to improve their time management skills. Users can not only see their app usage, but also compete with friends or global average. Furthermore, Focus sums up all users' saved time to understand how much time saved for the world by the app. We wish to make mobile users raise awareness of their own app usage, and pay more attention on whether they are in a healthy relationship with their phones. As far as I’m concerned, I will contribute to the Campus vivacious atmosphere with my creativity. Throughout a great amount of workshops, I had many insightful and inspirational ideas in my mind, hoping to give them a try. I deeply believe that, with the power of perseverance and creativity, even though young as we are, we can change the world.

Focusing on phones 24/7days is a big problem for young people. Focus can effectively help 230M potential mobile addicted users to improve their time management skills, users can not only see their app usage, but also compete with friends or global average. We wish to make mobile users raise awareness of their own app usage, and pay more attention on whether they are in a healthy relationship with their phones.

This idea really solves a problem but how will you sustain it. I hope you implement it
