Description

EquiLex is an AI-powered app that seeks to legally empower citizens with transparent and inclusive access to justice. It provides an accessible legal platform for citizens to understand legal documents, recognize red flags, and make informed decisions. By combining rapidly rising AI technology with a goal of education, this product promotes just and sustainable communities. This app contains four core features aimed at addressing distinct issues. First, EquiLex allows users to upload any legal documents and works as an extension for any digital terms. It analyzes the dense, legal language and outputs a simple summary varying based on the length sought by the user. It highlights red flags such as hidden fees, unfair clauses, forced arbitration, privacy risks, and restrictive terms. Should the user be concerned about any of the aforementioned issues, they will be provided with mitigation strategies as a method of protecting themselves. This strategy will include regenerated contracts eliminating any problem areas, allowing users to have background and leverage for negotiations. This feature aims to increase their own autonomy when signing any contracts. Second, the app will cross-reference their potential problems with preexisting court cases near their location. This allows users to find parallels between their red flags and cases that received legal compensation. They will receive insight into how similar cases were handled, what arguments work in such cases, and how the issue was resolved: through arbitration, small claims court, or legal assistance. Through this feature, legal knowledge becomes a community resource that promotes inclusivity. Third, EquiLex includes an AI-powered translation tool that increases the accessibility of legal knowledge to nonnative speakers as well. For immigrants and international students navigating a foreign country, this resource allows for them to understand what they are signing into. This eliminates the linguistic barrier of legal institutions by aiding vulnerable populations. Fourth, EquiLex aims to provide a permanent solution to uneducated populations by gamifying legal knowledge to allow self-sufficiency beyond the app. This would include questions based on legal knowledge with a rewarding points-system that allows for leveling up. Questions will begin by highlighting obvious red flags and move on to more nuanced topics; users will be able to choose which types of questions will be pertinent to them: housing, employment, privacy, etc. Ultimately, they will gain access to legal knowledge that extends beyond the scope of the app, equipping them with the ability to make educated decisions in immediate situations. This increases the approachability of legal literacy, incentivizing them with an element of entertainment. Through all four of these features combined, it embodies the ideals of SDG 16, supporting peaceful and inclusive communities.
