Description

The Sport Café is a purpose-built, eco-friendly community hub in Dessie, Ethiopia, designed to fill a critical gap: a safe, reliable, and welcoming space where people can gather to watch live football, enjoy healthy local food, and build genuine connections. In Dessie, over 256,000 young people have nowhere to watch football that is both affordable and reliable. Informal bars are cheap but suffer power outages, poor sanitation, and male-dominated environments. Hotel lounges are reliable but priced out of reach for most youth and families. Women are excluded. People with disabilities are invisible. The Sport Café solves this by combining elements that already exist in new ways. Backup power ensures matches are never interrupted. A 5,000-liter water reservoir guarantees continuous service. Hotel-grade sanitation signals respect and dignity. The space is designed for inclusion: well-lit areas, professional security, wide doorways, and accessible restrooms welcome women and people with disabilities. The café creates formal jobs for young people, with fair wages, contracts, and skills training. It sources food from local farmers, supporting the local economy and reducing transport emissions. It is designed for sustainability, with plans to add solar panels over time. Revenue comes from multiple streams: non-match day café operations, match-day sales, group bookings, premium surcharges for high-demand matches, and merchandise. This diversification reduces risk and ensures the business can sustain itself while serving the community. The Sport Café is not just a business. It is a place where everyone belongs.
