#GoodFeedback

Updated on: Mar 12, 2025

Effective feedback is an essential part of successful peer learning and any teamwork and project development. It helps to ensure that (learning) projects are continuously improved and that peers can develop further.

Best practices for mutual feedback

  • Start the conversation with something positive: A positive introduction creates a pleasant atmosphere and shows appreciation for the work done so far. This increases the willingness of the other person to accept and implement the following feedback.

  • Do NOT evaluate the feasibility; do not evaluate the chances of success: Feedback should focus on the quality and potential for improvement of the project, without evaluating the feasibility or chances of success. This prevents misunderstandings and frustration.

  • It is not about sympathy or antipathy towards the peer: Feedback should be factual and objective. Personal feelings must not influence the feedback in order to ensure a fair and constructive conversation.

  • Give constructive feedback on how the project could be improved: Stay objective and give specific examples: constructive feedback is specific and actionable. It should include specific examples and suggestions on how certain aspects of the project can be improved.

  • Allow the other person to respond: feedback is a dialogue, not a monologue. Give the other person the opportunity to react to the feedback and contribute their own perspectives.

  • Offer specific suggestions or solutions: In addition to identifying problems, it is helpful to offer specific solutions. This shows commitment and actively supports the peer in improving the project.

  • Pay attention to your tone: A respectful and supportive tone promotes open and productive communication. Make sure that your feedback is perceived as helpful and not as criticism.

  • Take 5-10 minutes immediately after the review for your feedback: It is important to provide feedback promptly, while impressions are still fresh. This increases the accuracy and relevance of the feedback.

  • You can help your peer with a fail if the project is not yet ready! If you point out significant flaws and make suggestions for improvement, you can help your peer to further develop the project and ensure future success.
