Effective and efficient learning is based on a combination of proven strategies and customisation to your individual preferences.
Your learning environment and routines should be optimised to maximise your concentration. This includes setting up a dedicated study area that is free from distractions and creating a pleasant and motivating atmosphere.
Regular breaks are also crucial as they help to avoid mental fatigue and maintain receptiveness. Techniques such as the #Pomodoro technique, which alternates 25-minute study periods with five-minute breaks, can be effective.
It is also beneficial to set goals and monitor progress to increase motivation and keep track of your learning success.
Note: Our course is less concerned with learning subject-specific material, so the most well-known techniques for the classic form of ‘learning by heart’ are only ‘touched on’ below: One of the most basic and effective techniques is spaced repetition; students should spread learning material over longer periods of time instead of cramming it in short intensive periods. This method prevents rapid forgetting and promotes a deeper understanding of the material.
Another effective method is active retrieval, where students try to recall information from memory rather than just passively reading through it. This can be done by using flashcards, answering practice questions or teaching the material to others.
It is also important to integrate different learning formats, such as visual material, audio files or practical applications, to cater for different learning styles.
