Intrinsic motivation arises from internal incentives. When you are intrinsically motivated, you learn out of your own interest and enjoyment of a task. Our course relies entirely on this motivation, because it is sustainable and often leads to deeper learning and greater satisfaction. So we hope you are interested in the course Life Art & Entrepreneurship because you are fascinated by the topic, not because you will receive ECTS credits for it.
Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is driven by external incentives such as grades, rewards or recognition. This form of motivation can be effective for achieving short-term goals or completing necessary tasks that may be less interesting.
Understanding these types of motivation is essential for forming good habits. James Clear, author of the book ‘Atomic Habits’, suggests developing habits in stages, making small, easy-to-implement changes. One approach to this could be to couple new habits with existing routines, which Clear calls ‘habit stacking’. For example, you could develop the habit of studying right after breakfast to establish a regular study routine.
Clear also emphasises the importance of environment in habit formation. A well-organised, distraction-free study environment can make extrinsic motivators like deadlines less stressful and promote intrinsic motivation by reducing distractions.
