Self-organisation (self-management)

Updated on: Mar 12, 2025

There is no ‘best method’ for self-management; most methods work if you follow the guidelines/procedures to the letter. We have compiled a list of methods and resources for you at the bottom of this post. You can try out different ones and develop your own mix of methods that suits you best. If you are unsure, we recommend starting with one of the best-known self-management methods, ‘Getting Things Done’ (GTD) by David Allen. However, we also encourage you to look at the other methods and you can also search the internet and libraries yourself to see if there is a method that suits you better. There is no dogma here.

GTD is a comprehensive self-management system that aims to organise professional and private tasks efficiently in order to increase mental clarity and productivity. The core of the method is the systematic recording of all upcoming tasks in a trustworthy system outside of one's own head, in order to concentrate on action rather than on remembering. This begins with collecting all unfinished tasks in a central ‘inbox’ and categorising them into specific next steps, projects, waiting lists or reference materials. It is important that each task is clearly defined and that an immediate decision is made as to which is the next step required.

For entrepreneurs, it is essential to use this or a similar method to keep track of numerous and often complex tasks. A regular weekly review of the to-do list helps to check priorities and ensure that all projects and responsibilities are up to date and in view. Another advantage of the GTD method is the flexibility in the choice of tools; whether digital or on paper, the decisive factor is the reliable and consistent use of the chosen system. The clear separation of tasks into immediate actions and longer-term goals helps you to work efficiently on a daily basis while systematically pursuing long-term plans.
