Every year, 70,000 women in Germany are diagnosed with breast cancer. For around 18,000 of them, the disease proves fatal. However, it is not the tumour itself that is life-threatening, but its spread throughout the body. This is why early detection is so important: if malignant changes in the breast are detected in good time through effective screening, treatment can prevent them from spreading. Mammography screening is offered to women as a statutory screening service only once every two years between the ages of 50 and 75. A clinical breast examination, on the other hand, is a core component of breast cancer screening for all women. We have significantly improved this form of early detection: discovering hands utilises the superior sense of touch of visually impaired women and trains them to become professional medical tactile examiners (MTEs) over a nine-month programme. Once qualified, they can use their outstanding skills to detect even very small changes in breast tissue (6-8 mm) in order to find breast cancer at an early stage. The tactile breast examination takes between 30 and 60 minutes. MTEs use patented special adhesive strips to orientate herself on the breast whilst systematically palpating it at all tissue depths according to a standardised procedure. The tactile breast examination is always carried out under medical supervision.
