EcoCents is an innovative project designed to address the critical issue of low recycling rates in São Paulo by transforming waste management practices through community engagement and financial incentives. São Paulo produces an alarming 27,000 tons of waste daily, with only 2.1% being recycled, highlighting an urgent need for effective waste management solutions. EcoCents aims to revolutionize this sector by combining environmental stewardship with economic benefits, fostering a culture of sustainability within the community. Our project focuses on installing strategically located collection points in various communities, starting with Jardim Panorama, to facilitate convenient disposal of recyclable waste. Each participant receives a unique identification code, which they use to label their recyclable waste bags before depositing them in secure bins. These collection points, complemented by our ready-to-deploy prototype trash bins, streamline the recycling process and ensure accurate tracking of each participant’s contributions. The process begins with participants signing up on our user-friendly website to receive their unique identification codes. These codes are used to label recyclable waste bags, ensuring accurate tracking and rewards. Strategically placed collection points in accessible community locations are equipped with clear instructions and secure bins for waste disposal. Weekly, a contracted recycling company collects the labeled waste, processes it at their facilities, and resells the materials. Participants earn points based on the type and weight of their recyclables, which can be converted to cash via Pix on our platform, providing direct financial benefits. Our website also offers resources and workshops on sustainability, empowering community members with knowledge to make informed eco-friendly choices. The goals of EcoCents are multifaceted. Environmentally, we aim to significantly increase recycling rates, reduce landfill waste, mitigate pollution (particularly in local water bodies like the Tietê River), and decrease greenhouse gas emissions associated with waste decomposition. Economically, we provide financial benefits to participants, supporting local economies and ensuring the financial sustainability of the project through the sale of recycled materials and shared revenue. Socially, we foster community engagement and cooperation, strengthening community bonds as residents work together towards environmental sustainability. Designed to be scalable and replicable in other communities and cities, EcoCents plans to expand its positive impact on sustainable development. As we grow, we intend to establish long-term partnerships with local businesses, schools, universities, and municipalities to enhance our operational efficiency and reach. Additionally, we aim to diversify the types of materials collected, including e-waste and organic waste for composting, further reducing landfill contributions. By continuously innovating and adapting based on community feedback and performance metrics, EcoCents strives to remain responsive to changing market conditions and community needs, ensuring both environmental impact and financial viability. Ultimately, our goal is to make recycling an integral part of community life, contributing to a cleaner environment and a more sustainable future for São Paulo and beyond.
