World’s Indigenous Peoples

August 9 is observed every year as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.
According to the United Nations, there are about 370 million indigenous people in the world living in 90 different countries.

Indigenous people are the guardians of 80 percent of global biodiversity.
Further on, the way how they manage their natural resources can contribute to mitigating climate change. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), indigenous people are key allies to achieve the 2030 Agenda due to their knowledge and experience.

They also speak over 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures. The 2019 Theme is dedicated to their languages and on the urgent need to preserve and promote them.

According to the UN, it is estimated that an indigenous language disappears every two weeks.
Language is a crucial factor regarding issues related to education, technological development, environment protection, expression, social inclusion and many more.

“Indigenous languages are disappearing at an alarming rate, each one taking with it a cultural and intellectual heritage. We must protect languages under threat of extinction,” Secretary-General of the UN Antonio Guterres said on Friday.

It has been observed that a lost language is a lost culture. A lost culture is invaluable knowledge lost. Language are dying because in nowadays, parents do not not even speak their mother tongue to to their children, thus most of the children from elite family cannot speak their mother tongue.languages are true instruments of our perception of reality as they influence the way we perceive things in our environment, the way we think, the way we act ,the way we speak and the way we behave in any given social context. It’s therefore pour responsibility to ensure that our culture and language never get distinct.

This is a call to all parents to not allow language to die in their time

“Our life of poverty is as necessary as the work itself. Only in heaven will we see how much we owe to the poor for helping us to love God better because of them.”
