What is already working in New York and Paris should also work in Berlin. The first cooperative supermarket that belongs to its consumers is to be built here. You can shop and have a say in who becomes a member of the cooperative and works 3 hours a month on the project. The goal: sustainable, high-quality products at comparatively low prices.
However, it is also important to question how the groceries get into the shops and our shopping baskets in the first place. This is shown by a current Oxfam study, which attested a catastrophic result for German supermarkets in an international comparison: from the protection of workers to the treatment of smallholders and transparency in the supply chains. The large supermarket chains consistently performed poorly.
SuperCoop is not about profits, but about access to good products for everyone, fair management and transparency. So that everyone benefits: farmers, consumers and the environment.
This interview was created at the Entrepreneurship Summit 2019. Co-initiator of the project, Johanna Kühner, talks about the vision of a jointly run supermarket, the goals and current challenges.
