FEEDALGO
(Alina Frankl, Mira Kaltenegger, Lani Marie Roßler, Severin Schwertner)
uses the red algae ‘Asparagopsis taxiformis’, which has a very high omega-3 content. If this algae is fed to cows in freeze-dried form as a dietary supplement, methane emissions are reduced by more than 80 %. Cows currently emit an average of around 300 litres of methane per day due to the food they consume and the decomposition process in the leaf stomach.
Just 80 grams per day as a feed supplement is enough to achieve this effect without affecting the flavour or quality of the milk and meat. At the same time, the cows' feed utilisation improves, which means that feed consumption can be reduced by around 16%.
We are planning to work together with an Austrian dairy. This will enable us to expand the range of sustainable dairy products on the market and offer customers the opportunity to buy milk with our seal.
